Cloud migration
What would it cost you to leave your cloud?
Lock-in never shows up on the invoice. It shows up when you try to leave. The calculator estimates how tightly your platform is bound, which items make a move expensive and roughly how long it would take.

Methodology
How the calculator works
Every assumption is visible. You can change the day rate, capacity and data transfer price in the calculator itself.
- Re-engineering applications
- Each service gets a base effort depending on how much infrastructure is defined as code (1, 3 or 6 person-days), multiplied by a container factor (0.8 for mostly, 1.0 for partly, 1.3 for barely containerised). Each affected service adds effort per dependency: serverless 6, proprietary database 10, IoT platform 8, AI/ML 5, messaging 4 and identity 4 person-days. “Some” means 25% of services, “core” means 75%.
- Parallel operation
- During the migration, old and new environments run at the same time. The model uses 50% of today’s monthly bill for the project duration plus one month of overlap.
- Data transfer
- Stored data volume times the list price per GB (guide values: AWS and Azure €0.08, Google Cloud €0.11, other providers €0.05). The EU Data Act limits switching charges, including egress, to cost until 12 January 2027 and prohibits them after that.
- Devices
- Connected devices that talk directly to the provider’s IoT service must be pointed to a new endpoint: €3 per device with remote management, €15 with partial remote management, €60 without (share of an on-site visit).
- Expiring commitments
- Remaining minimum spend from Savings Plans, Reserved Instances or enterprise agreements that can no longer be used after switching is counted in full.
- Duration and range
- Duration is total person-days divided by available capacity per month. The ±25% band is an assumed sensitivity band for illustration, not a validated accuracy range. Real projects depend heavily on code quality and team experience. You can adjust the day rate, delivery capacity and data-transfer price in the calculator under “Adjust assumptions”.
- Lock-in index
- A weighted sum of service dependencies, infrastructure-as-code and container maturity, connected devices, expiring commitments and data volume, normalised to 0–100.

Turn the estimate into a decision
The Cloud Migration Roadmap assesses your actual dependencies, costs and options, including staying put or modernising in parts.
Questions about this tool
How accurate is the result?
It shows the order of magnitude and the main cost drivers. A decision needs an assessment of your actual dependencies, data flows and contracts, which is what the Cloud Migration Roadmap delivers.
Aren’t egress fees the biggest cost?
Rarely. In most scenarios, rebuilding provider-specific services costs many times more than moving the data. On top of that, the EU Data Act limits switching charges to cost and prohibits them from 12 January 2027.
Does a high lock-in index mean I should switch?
No. Managed services often save a lot of operational effort. What matters is whether the dependency was a deliberate choice and whether there is a realistic way out if prices, contracts or requirements change.
Are my inputs stored?
The calculation runs in your browser. The latest result summary and result link are temporarily stored in this tab for the booking window. If you share them by e-mail, you decide whether to send the message.
